Roper River Veterans Retreat
The retreat is open and held during the month of August each Year.
It is not accessible at other times.
Visitors are invited to rest by 60km of the magnificent Roper River. Camping is free,
there is fresh water (and crocs) in the river, with lots of peace for regeneration.
Protocol: Take only photographs, leave only footprints, you are totally responsible for
yourself as there is no liability to the property owners. Ensure you are capable of “Bush
Camping” bringing everything you need.
Permits: Are required to enter and remain on the land.
Where is it? Approximately 31 kilometres East from the Stuart Highway travelling on the
Roper Highway, turning left into Elsey Station. Turn east again at the quarry and follow
the dirt track about 14km to the main camping area, usually suitable to most vehicles
however if a first timer maybe do a reccie.
Fishing; Barra, Seratoga, and Black Bream, Catfish and Cherubin are normally found in
the river.
Nearest facilities: Mataranka is 35kms for fuel, groceries, Katherine 140kms travelling
on the Stuart Hwy for all medical needs, supermarkets, and other facilities.
